Turning Constraints into Competitive Advantage

When a leading meat processor required an automated palletising solution for frozen extruded meat blocks, the objective was clear: improve efficiency, reliability and throughput while integrating seamlessly with the existing production facility.

But this project wasn’t just about automation.

It was about delivering the right automation within real-world constraints.

Working closely with the customer, Fibre King has designed and is supplying a fully automated low-level palletising system tailored specifically for frozen meat processing environments. The solution has been engineered to handle extruded meat blocks presenting at temperatures between -18°C and -12°C, automatically collating product layers and palletising them for wrapping and dispatch. Operating at up to 10 blocks per minute, the inline system is designed to ensure smooth product flow while reducing manual handling.

This solution reflects Fibre King’s Robotic Layer Forming (RLF) approach—focusing on intelligent layer handling, compact system design, and seamless line integration rather than relying solely on traditional robotic arms.

“Automation isn’t about choosing a robot. It’s about choosing the right solution.”

The Challenge

Performance, Integration and Footprint

The project requires a palletising solution that can:

  • Integrate seamlessly with an existing inline production system

  • Handle frozen meat blocks reliably in a washdown environment

  • Maintain consistent throughput and operational efficiency

  • Minimise manual handling and improve workplace safety

  • Fit within the available plant footprint

While robotic palletising solutions were considered, Fibre King identified that a compact mechanical palletising system would deliver the best outcome for the application—aligned with the principles of its RLF technology.

The Fibre King Solution

Engineered for Efficiency

Fibre King is supplying a low-level palletising line incorporating:

  • Low-level palletiser

  • 10-pallet capacity pallet dispenser

  • Pallet slip sheet hopper & applicator

  • Fromm bottom sheet applicator

  • Infeed conveyor and pusher system

  • Layer pad inserter

  • Empty and full pallet conveying

  • Full pallet scissor lift

  • Fromm FA6 automatic stretch wrapper with top sheet applicator

  • Cat3 safety system with safety fencing and guarding to Australian / New Zealand Standards

  • Installation and commissioning

The palletiser automatically collates blocks from the upstream conveyor, forming layers on a 316 stainless steel layer deck before placing them precisely onto pallets. Completed pallets are then automatically transferred to the Fromm FA6 stretch wrapping system, where a top sheet is applied and the pallet is wrapped before collection by forklift.

The entire process is controlled and managed by an Allen Bradley CompactLogix PLC with operator HMI ensuring reliable automation, monitoring and fault detection.

This layer-based approach to product handling is a core element of Fibre King’s RLF technology, delivering consistent pallet quality, repeatability and system efficiency.

“A fully automated palletising system—without the footprint of a traditional robot cell.”

Why Not a Robotic Arm?

Smarter Automation Starts with the Right Choice

Robotic palletising systems are often seen as the default automation solution, however in this case they were not the best fit.

Two key factors influenced the decision:

1. Space efficiency

Robotic palletising cells typically require a significantly larger footprint for the robot, guarding, reach envelope and safety zones. The Fibre King mechanical palletiser allows the system to remain compact and inline with the production process, maximising available floor space.

2. Cost effectiveness

A robotic palletising solution would increase the capital cost of the project. The mechanical palletiser delivers the required performance at a more affordable investment level, while still achieving full automation.

Importantly, automation doesn’t always mean a robotic arm.

Fibre King’s RLF technology expands the definition of robotic palletising, focusing on intelligent layer forming and automated handling rather than relying on articulated robotic arms.

The Fibre King palletising system is still a fully automated robotic process — it is a machine that replaces manual labour and performs the palletising task automatically. In this application, the most effective robot is simply a smarter mechanical solution.

“Sometimes the smartest automation isn’t a robot—it’s the right design.”

Designed for Meat Processing Environments

Built for Real-World Conditions

The system has been designed specifically for the demands of meat processing facilities, including:

  • Stainless steel construction for hygiene and durability

  • Washdown capability for sanitation requirements

  • Cold environment operation for frozen product handling

  • Integrated sheet application and stretch wrapping for load stability

These features are designed to ensure reliable performance in harsh processing environments while maintaining product integrity.

Commercial Impact

Designed to Deliver Measurable ROI

The Fibre King palletising line is designed to deliver:

  • Fully automated palletising of frozen meat blocks

  • Improved line efficiency and throughput

  • Reduced manual handling and operator intervention

  • A compact system footprint within the existing plant layout

  • A cost-effective automation solution tailored to the application

“Higher efficiency. Lower cost. Smaller footprint.”

Smart Automation, Not Just Robots

At Fibre King, the goal isn’t simply to install robots — it’s to deliver the right automation solution for the job.

Powered by Fibre King’s RLF technology, our palletising solutions are engineered to combine intelligent layer forming, compact design and seamless integration.

Sometimes that means a robotic arm. Sometimes it means a smarter mechanical system.

In this case, the solution has been designed as a compact, efficient and affordable palletising system that will meet the customer’s operational needs while delivering reliable automation.

Smart. Compact. Efficient. Affordable.

That’s what Fibre King delivers.
